Site Visits

On Friday October 7th there are two site visit options to take part in. Places are limited on both visits so please ensure you register today to secure your preference!

Friday October 7th

9.30am – 4pm SCHOOL VISITS

Tour 1

9.30am Assemble at Deakin University – Waurn Ponds

9:45am St Josephs College

Year 8 students were challenged to create 3 exhibition pieces to explain this question: Explain why a large organism such as a human requires systems to work together to respond to change compared to a unicellular organism? Also an exploration of the year 9 STEM Challenge program, Rockets, and the Year 10 STEM Guitar unit.

10:50am Geelong Baptist College

Year 8 students undertake STEM Design Challenges within the Science program, focussing on energy and the engineering process. The tour will include the final challenge task presentation by a group of students.

1:10pm Picnic lunch on the Geelong foreshore.

1:50pm Newcomb Secondary College

A group of Year 7 students will demonstrate their coding skills and how it used to control robots, followed by an exploration of the STEM teaching behind the design of the learning activities.

3.30pm Return to Deakin University

Tour 2

9.30am Assemble at Deakin University – Waurn Ponds

9:45am Belmont High School

Within years 7 Mathematics (algebra) and Science (STEM skills), students participate in a program drawing upon concept development through student generated representations and approaches to problem solving, in the contexts of applied learning activities.

11:30am Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College

Year 7 students undertake a Problem Based Challenge, investigating disabled access ramps, within both Mathematics (measurement) and Science (forces and gravity) areas of studies. The tour will include meeting some of these students and learn from them, their experience of this type of approach to anintegrated STEM program.

12:45pm Picnic lunch on the Geelong foreshore.

1:30pm Grovedale College

Groups of Year 8 students undertake a STEM Challenge to design, construct and test a rolling vehicle. Team members visit local high-tech industries, as well as investigate their ideas in Science and Mathematics classes, and then design and construct the vehicles in technology classes. Culminates with a challenge afternoon at the College, which the tour will observe.

3.30pm Return to Deakin University
